Geosynthetics have a great development prospect in seepage prevention of water retaining buildings because of their reliability and economic superiority. Geomembrane impermeable rockfill dam development at home and abroad also highlights the signs of development. This paper analyzes and summarizes two types of structure layout of geomembrane inclined wall rockfill dam and geomembrane core rockfill dam, which provide some reference for the design of geomembrane impermeable face rockfill dam.

El Cajón dam,Mexico,has a 188 m high concrete-face rockfill dam. A very extensive campaign of investigations was carried out for its design,as described in a previous paper[1].Some additional data about his behavior after completion confirm the good results coming from a good theoretical design added to a pragmatical approach. The field investigations included two large test fills,which were fundamental to define the final design and construction specifications. The behavior of the dam,after completion,has been excellent.Some instrumentation results additional to the ones given in the original paper are presented here,as well as a description of how a more practical interpretation of the investigation results,supported by the suggestions of well-known consultants,resulted in important simplifications in construction specifications and design details,without impairing its performance.

The Shuibuya Hydro Development, located on the Qingjiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, is a concrete faced rockfill dam (CFRD) with a height of 232 m. At the stage of feasibility study, field tests of blasting and compacting of limestone used as the rockfill material of the dam were carried out. The blasting was performed according to the design requirements. The results were in line with the test design assumption and could also meet the construction requirements.

Karntner Elektrizit(a)ts-AG (KELAG) in Carinthia operates several hydropower plants with embankment dams, ranging from small structures of compensation basins to 100 m high rockfill dams. Most of the hydropower plants, producing electrical energy over decades, were designed and constructed by the senior engineers of KELAG. They also have been predominantly responsible for the safety of the hydraulic structures and have gained great experience in the application and interpretation of the instrumentation used for dam monitoring. Characteristic data on dam behavior is transmitted to the permanently manned control centre. Over the last fifteen years special software has been developed to raise the quality of dam surveillance and data management. The recorded data is important for the dam safety assessment of each dam for the whole lifetime of the structure. The yearly comparison of dam monitoring shows the differences in seepage or deformation. A case study of statistical calculation has been done with the Hochwurten dam, a fifty meter high rockfill dam with asphalt concrete lining.

An overview,case histories and reports of some of them will be presented.For the development of next-generation embankment dam breach models it is necessary to develop a database of high quality realworld dam failure data.May be this future vision will cover only a relative small number of failures,but with the target to obtain high-quality data,identifying errors in existing data bases and harmonize conflicting statements of individual failures.
